Whirlpool Water Filters

Whirlpool's EveryDrop line is one of the most broadly certified consumer-filter portfolios in the US: 52 NSF/ANSI 42, 47 NSF/ANSI 53, and 41 NSF/ANSI 401 listings covering lead, microplastics, BPA, and pharmaceuticals.

Best for

  • Refrigerator-filter buyers who want the genuine EveryDrop cartridge with certified lead, mercury, and emerging-contaminant reduction
  • Households on chlorinated city water who also want NSF/ANSI 401 coverage of microplastics and pharmaceuticals
  • Owners of Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, JennAir, or Amana fridges (EveryDrop is the original cartridge that fits them)

Not recommended for

  • Households on private well water (the under-sink line is built for city water, not high-iron or high-sediment wells)
  • Buyers who specifically need NSF/ANSI 58 reverse-osmosis certification — Whirlpool has 0 listed RO systems
  • Buyers who need a certified PFOA/PFOS claim (NSF/ANSI 401 covers the surrogate set, not an explicit PFOA/PFOS claim)
Mid tier — typically $200–$500

Certification Reality: What's Actually Tested

This table shows the NSF/IAPMO/WQA-listed certifications for each Whirlpool SKU we tracked, alongside the contaminants the brand markets but which do not appear on the third-party listing. Green chips are third-party verified; amber chips are marketing claims without a corresponding listing. Every row links to the live certifier database so you can verify the listed claim set yourself.

Whirlpool's EveryDrop marketing is unusual in this category for staying close to what is actually certified — the EDR1 product page does NOT claim PFAS or fluoride removal. The gaps above are assumptions a buyer should check, not claims the brand is making.

About Whirlpool

Whirlpool holds one of the broadest NSF-certified filter footprints of any consumer brand — 52 NSF/ANSI 42, 47 NSF/ANSI 53, and 41 NSF/ANSI 401 listings (as of 2026-05-20).

It's a 1911-founded US appliance maker (NYSE: WHR) in Benton Charter Township, Michigan. Its filter business is mostly the OEM cartridge supplier for Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, JennAir, and Amana refrigerators.

In 2014 it pulled its consumer filters under the EveryDrop brand. Its four flagship cartridges (EDR1RXD1, EDR2RXD1, EDR3RXD1, EDR5RXD1) fit most post-2007 Whirlpool-group fridges.

Founded:1911
Headquarters:Benton Charter Township, Michigan, USA

Buyers with a Whirlpool-group fridge wanting broad cert coverage

Brita Elite

Renters / pitcher-format buyers with municipal water

Bottom line: a format-and-price call, but EDR1 wins on cert breadth. Its NSF/ANSI 401 coverage adds emerging contaminants Brita Elite (NSF/ANSI 42 + 53 only) doesn't carry.

  • Pick the EDR1 if you have a Whirlpool-group fridge and want the broadest listed scope — ~$45, ~6 months / 200 gal.
  • Pick Brita Elite if you want a cheap, any-household pitcher — ~$18, ~6 months / 120 gal.

What Reddit Says About Whirlpool

These quotes are paraphrased — not verbatim — from public Reddit threads. Each card links to the original thread so you can read the discussion in context and verify the sentiment for yourself.

r/appliancesPositive
The genuine EveryDrop EDR1 is the only cartridge I trust in our Maytag — third-party knockoffs taste fine at first, but the indicator light still tracks gallons.
View thread
r/waterfiltersPositive
Whirlpool WHED20 was the cheapest NSF-53 lead-certified under-sink I could find. Two-stage install was straightforward; the housing is plastic but holds pressure fine.
View thread
r/PlumbingMixed
Spent six months running a third-party EDR3 alternative. Flow rate was fine, but I kept getting indicator-light errors after each replacement. Switching back to the genuine EveryDrop solved it.

Whirlpool Customer Reviews Summary

200,000Total Reviews
4.7
Average

What Customers Love

  • The original cartridge avoids the indicator-light errors that aftermarket cartridges tend to trigger
  • Water looks visibly clearer after installation
  • The six-month service interval feels reasonable for the price
  • Broad NSF certification reassures buyers worried about more than just chlorine

Common Concerns

  • The original cartridge costs more than third-party ones: about $45 versus about $15 for look-alikes
  • The press-fit cartridge can leak if it goes in at the wrong angle or without enough force
  • The indicator-light reset steps differ by fridge model, which frustrates first-time buyers
  • PFAS coverage is limited despite the broad NSF/ANSI 401 listing

The Whirlpool P8WB2L refrigerator cartridge alone carries 105,000+ Amazon ratings at a 4.7-star average.

Across all Whirlpool / EveryDrop SKUs sold on Amazon, no flagship cartridge falls below a 4.5-star average.

EveryDrop EDR1, EDR2, and EDR3 make up the bulk of Whirlpool's filter reviews, and buyers consistently point to the original-cartridge fit as the main reason they trust it.

About Whirlpool Marketing Language

Some claims on Whirlpool packaging and product pages are frequently confused with what the underlying third-party certifications actually cover. The note below documents one such mismatch with primary-source citations so you can verify the specifics yourself.

Whirlpool's NSF/ANSI 401 coverage is real, but it does not include an explicit PFOA/PFOS reduction claim.

The certs are real and unusually broad — but PFOA/PFOS is the gap. Whirlpool's EveryDrop EDR1/EDR2/EDR3 cartridges hold one of the deepest NSF/ANSI 401 footprints in the category: BPA, ibuprofen, atenolol, naproxen, microplastics, DEET, trimethoprim, estrone, carbamazepine, and more.

What the listings don't cover is an explicit PFOA/PFOS reduction claim, even though the activated-carbon media reduces some PFAS in practice.

If certified PFOA/PFOS removal is your priority, look for an SKU whose NSF/ANSI 401 or NSF P473 listing names PFOA and PFOS by name.

How We Researched Whirlpool

Our brand assessments follow a four-tier source ladder. We start with Tier 1 primary sources — NSF International, IAPMO, and WQA certification listings, plus SEC filings and EPA records — to establish what is third-party verified. We then layer in brand-official statements (corporate sites, datasheets, support pages) for context, tier-1 journalism for independent reporting, and community signals (Reddit threads, Amazon reviews) for real-world ownership experience. Every claim on this page traces back to one of the citations below.
