Water softener cost estimator

Put in a ZIP code and this sizes a softener from the hardness we publish for that area, then prices it against the plumber wage published for that metropolitan area. It shows the arithmetic, says what the range rests on, and keeps every optional extra on its own line. It asks for no name, no phone number and no email, and it does not pass anything to a dealer.

Sets both the local plumber wage and the hardness the size is computed from. Submitting reloads the page with the local answer.

Drives the daily water use in the sizing formula below.

A loop is already there, with shut-offs and a drain within reach. You declare this โ€” we never infer it from an address, because an inferred site class would move the price without you seeing why.

Iron loads the resin the way hardness does, so it raises the size the same way. Leave it at zero if you have not tested for it.

Nothing is sent anywhere and no account is asked for; the button is there so the page still works with scripting turned off.

A 32,000-grain softener in the United States

A 32,000-grain softener on a standard build costs $1,029โ€“$1,305 installed in the United States โ€” a modelled estimate from manufacturer prices as of 2026-08-23 and BLS wage data for May 2025 reference period (OEWS M2025), not yet calibrated on local quotes.

Industry-standard serviceable valve โ€” the independent-dealer default.

  • Wage basis: no state-level survey covers this area, so the labour figure uses the national wage.
  • This range is for the country as a whole. The wage behind it is the one published for U.S..
  • Sized for 4 people at 12.87 grains per gallon for the 7,531 cities our hardness dataset classifies hard or very hard, with site work declared as โ€œpre-plumbed loopโ€.

Data updated 2026-08-24. Equipment prices read 2026-08-23; wages from the May 2025 reference period (OEWS M2025), published 2026-05-12.

How that size was worked out

  1. Water hardness for the 7,531 cities our hardness dataset classifies hard or very hard: 12.87 grains per gallon.
  2. 12.87 grains per gallon ร— 4 people ร— 75 gallons per person per day = 3,861 grains a day.
  3. ร— 7 days between regenerations = 27,027 grains between regenerations.
  4. Rounded up to the next common residential capacity (24,000 / 32,000 / 40,000 / 48,000 / 64,000 grains): 32,000 grains.

The 75 gallons per person per day, the 7-day regeneration interval and the iron compensation are the same figures our size calculator uses; this page imports them rather than restating them.

Self-install, independent installer, or the national dealer channel

All three routes at the same size, because the spread between them is the most useful fact here and it is the one a seller cannot show you.

Equipment only. No labour, and no allowance for the fittings, bypass, drain line and sanitiser a self-installer buys alongside the unit โ€” nothing in this dataset prices those, so they are left out rather than guessed at.

Dual-tank metered demand on a proprietary dealer-channel platform.

  • Basis: this range rests on the published dual-tank prices of the manufacturers that publish one. The major national dealer-channel brands publish no price at all, so it is likely to read low against a real dealer quote until enough verified quotes exist to replace it.
  • Wage basis: no state-level survey covers this area, so the labour figure uses the national wage.

The plumber wage published for U.S. is $30.67 an hour, from the May 2025 reference period (OEWS M2025). Loaded for overhead, the truck, insurance, permits and margin, that becomes $77โ€“$107 an hour โ€” a stated trade convention rather than something we measured, carried through as a range instead of collapsed to one value.

Equipment $876 plus base install labour $153โ€“$429 and no site-complexity hours, because you told us the loop is already there.

The same size on each build class

A build class is set by the valve and the platform, never by the badge on the tank and never by price. Listed in the order ยง4.1 defines them, which is not a ranking: a class listed earlier is not a cheaper one.

Extras, each on its own line

None of these is in the range above, and none of them ever will be folded into it. Being unable to see which lines are optional is the most common way people overpay, so each is separate and each can be taken out.

  • Reverse osmosis drinking-water system

    Not priced

No ancillary is priced anywhere in this dataset, so this line is reported unavailable rather than estimated โ€” never as zero, and never folded into the softener figure.

Optional, and separate from the softener figure above โ€” it is never folded in.

  • Sediment pre-filter

    Not priced

No ancillary is priced anywhere in this dataset, so this line is reported unavailable rather than estimated โ€” never as zero, and never folded into the softener figure.

Where the labour figure comes from

The wage is published, the multiplier is not. For U.S. the plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters median is $30.67 an hour, from the May 2025 reference period (OEWS M2025), released 2026-05-12. Nobody charges a technicianโ€™s wage, so it is multiplied by 2.5โ€“3.5 to cover overhead, the truck, insurance, permits and margin, giving a loaded rate of $77โ€“$107 an hour.

That multiplier is a stated trade convention. It is not a figure the wage survey supplies and no statistical agency publishes it, which is why its whole plausible range is carried into the published interval instead of being collapsed to one value โ€” and it is the single parameter the model will fit once enough real quotes exist.

What the four site classes mean

Site work is added in hours, never as a percentage, and you declare it โ€” we never infer it from an address. An inferred site class would move the price without you ever seeing why.

  • Pre-plumbed loop โ€” adds 0 hours

A loop is already there, with shut-offs and a drain within reach.

  • Standard tie-in โ€” adds 2 hours

The unit ties into existing pipework close to where it will sit.

  • New line run to the unit โ€” adds 5 hours

New pipe has to be run to reach the unit's position.

  • Trenching needed โ€” adds 12 hours

The line has to be dug in โ€” the whole job turns on this one.

What it costs to run for 10 years

A unit sized to regenerate every 7 days runs 521 regenerations over 10 years โ€” and we publish no sourced dollar figure for what they consume, because as of 2026-08-24 not one of the four running costs below has a sourced price in this dataset. A ten-year figure turns on salt price, salt dose, drain volume and the local water tariff, and a national average for any of them would be a made-up number wearing a decimal point. Renting versus buying publishes a ten-year total anyway, as an interval built from declared assumption ranges rather than from sourced prices, and labelled that way.

  • Salt

Not published โ€” reported unavailable rather than estimated. It needs:

    • Delivered price of softener salt per pound, or per 40 lb bag.
    • Pounds of salt consumed per regeneration, as a function of capacity class.
  • Regeneration water

Not published โ€” reported unavailable rather than estimated. It needs:

    • Gallons of water sent to drain per regeneration.
    • Household water and sewer rate, per 1,000 gallons, by geography โ€” what regeneration water actually costs the owner.
  • Filter changes

Not published โ€” reported unavailable rather than estimated. It needs:

    • Replacement cartridge price and change interval for each ancillary that has one (sediment pre-filter, carbon tank, RO).
  • Service contract

Not published โ€” reported unavailable rather than estimated. It needs:

    • Annual dealer service-contract fee.

What this estimate is, and what it is not

It is a modelled estimate: manufacturer prices for the equipment, the published wage for the area, and stated conventions for the burden multiplier and the install hours. It is not a measurement of what people in your ZIP actually paid, and it does not claim to be โ€” the label beside every range says which kind it is, and that label will change visibly, not quietly, the day it stops being true.

Two inputs are yours rather than ours and both move the answer a lot: the site class, and the household size. A quote that comes in above the range is not automatically wrong โ€” it may be carrying site work, ancillaries or a service contract this estimate deliberately leaves out.

Sizing here inherits the hardness datasetโ€™s own uncertainty: some city values are utility-reported and some are county-level estimates. The water softener size calculator takes a hardness figure from your own test instead, and the hardness methodology explains which value is which.
