Can you drink the tap water? A country-by-country guide
It depends on where you are going, and no single figure settles it for one tap. For 54 countries we report the World Health Organization estimate of the share of the population that used a safely managed drinking-water service, with the year it covers.
It is a national figure. It is not a test of any town, hotel or tap, and it is not a travel advisory: for an official travel-health position, read the guidance your own national health authority publishes for the destination. Each figure is placed in one of three bands; the bands are our reading of the estimate, not the World Health Organizationโs. The figures were read on 19 September 2026.
For United Kingdom and United States we link our own guides instead.
