      Chromium-6 is one of the drinking-water contaminants where the filter recommendation is genuinely narrow: only NSF/ANSI 58–certified reverse osmosis (or distillation) reliably reduces it.       Hexavalent chromium (chromium-6) is a recognized carcinogen, made infamous by the Hinkley, California contamination case. It reaches drinking water mainly through industrial discharge — chrome plating, stainless-steel and textile manufacturing, leather tanning, and anti-corrosion cooling additives — and through natural weathering of chromium-bearing rock in some aquifers. The EPA regulates total chromium at 100 parts per billion (ppb), but there is no separate federal limit for chromium-6 specifically; several states, led by California, have pursued far stricter chromium-6 limits. Ingested chromium-6 is linked to elevated cancer risk and can damage the liver and kidneys at high doses. Because total-chromium reports can look 'safe' while still containing chromium-6, independent testing is the reliable way to confirm exposure. Reverse osmosis reduces both chromium-6 and chromium-3.
