How the labour figure is built

Fitting a 32,000-grain softener in the United States takes 2–4 hours at a loaded rate of $77–$107 an hour — $153–$429 of labour, worked up from the $30.67 median hourly wage the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes for this trade in the May 2025 reference period (OEWS M2025), released 2026-05-12.

Nobody charges a technician’s own wage, so the published wage is multiplied up to cover overhead, benefits, the truck, insurance, permit handling and margin. The two halves of that arithmetic do not have the same standing, and this page keeps them apart:

The multiplier — a declared convention of ours
We multiply that wage by 2.53.5, and publish 3 as the midpoint. That is a declared convention of ours, recorded against §4.1, owner decision C0-4 and signed by TapWaterData editorial policy: it reflects how residential trades conventionally bill, and it carries no external source, because none exists for it. It is not a figure the wage survey supplies and no statistical agency publishes it — the survey gives the wage this multiplies and says nothing about the multiple. If your local trade bills at a different multiple, the arithmetic above is yours to redo; the wage underneath it is not ours to change.
We carry its full plausible range into the published interval instead of collapsing it to one value, which is a large part of why the range is as wide as it is. It is also the single parameter this whole model fits: once enough verified quotes exist for a place, real prices set it there and the convention stops mattering.

The hours

We take the work itself as 24 hours, with 3 as the figure the published estimate is built on: isolating and draining the supply, setting the softener and the brine tank, making up the connections to the existing loop and the bypass, running the drain and overflow, filling, programming the valve, sanitising and flushing, leak-checking, and walking the owner through it. Two hours is a second pair of hands on an easy loop; four is one installer alone with awkward access.

Like the multiplier, that is a declared convention signed under §4.1 by TapWaterData editorial policy rather than a measurement, and it carries its range for the same reason. Everything beyond the base is carried by the site classes below, never by quietly widening it.

Why the local rate decides your bill

The same installation, the same hours, two areas: Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA publishes a median of $45.78 an hour for the trade and Kansas nonmetropolitan area publishes $27.63 — 66% more per hour for the same work, both published in the May 2025 reference period (OEWS M2025) and released 2026-05-12. Across all 573 areas this dataset covers, the trade runs $22.15 to $51.71 an hour.

That is the same unit, the same hours and the same work. It is also why a single national installation price is close to useless: the labour term is the part of the bill that moves with geography, and it moves by more than most people expect.

We never interpolate a rate between areas. If the survey publishes nothing for a metropolitan area, the figure steps down a chain — metropolitan, then the state’s nonmetropolitan survey area, then the state, then the nation — and the rung it stopped at is printed beside the number every time, because a state figure standing in for a city is a materially weaker claim than a city’s own.

What the self-install figure leaves out

It buys the unit and no hours, so the hours become yours: the same tie-in, bypass, drain and overflow work described above, plus the fittings and sanitiser to do it with. None of those parts is priced anywhere in this dataset, so the figure carries no allowance for them rather than a guessed one — treat it as a floor, not as a total. Plumbing work is also permitted and inspected differently from place to place, and manufacturers set their own warranty conditions, some of which turn on who did the work: both are worth checking before you decide, and neither is something this dataset can tell you.

Between the other two routes the difference is the channel rather than the hours. The dealer-channel figure is the premium build class of §4.1 — dual-tank metered demand on a proprietary platform — and it carries the disclosure above about what its price basis actually is.

Every figure on this page is built at the preplumbed site class, which adds 0 hours — so it assumes no site work at all rather than an average amount of it, and what your own house needs is added on top in hours you declare.

The site classes are added in hours, never as a percentage of the price, because that is what they actually are: more of the same work at the same loaded rate. Which one applies is declared by you and never inferred from your address, your hardness or anything else we hold — an inferred class would move a published price without you ever seeing why.

Those hour figures are a declared convention signed under §4.1 by TapWaterData editorial policy, in the same class as the base hours and the multiplier: they set the shape of the term — ordinal, additive, four steps — and its scale is carried by the multiplier that real quotes will eventually fit.

Everything else an installer might quote alongside the softener — reverse osmosis, a sediment pre-filter, a carbon tank, an iron filter, a neutraliser, salt delivery, a service contract — is a separate line that can be removed, and none of them is priced in this dataset yet. Being unable to see which lines are optional is the most common way people overpay for this, so they are never folded into the installation figure.

What this estimate is, and what it is not

Every range on this page is a modelled estimate: equipment at the prices manufacturers publish, plus the published wage for this area, plus our stated conventions for the burden multiplier and the install hours. It is not a measurement of what people actually paid, and it does not claim to be. The label beside every figure says so.

The other kind of range we publish is observed: the middle 80% of real installed quotes for a place, with the count and the date beside it. A place earns one only when it has at least 8 document-class quote observations and the resulting interval is shown, on quotes the model never saw, to contain what it claims. As of 2026-08-24 no place has earned one: 6,303 published ranges across 573 areas, every one of them modelled. Until then the modelled band is what we show, and we say so rather than showing nothing.

Two known weaknesses, stated rather than buried. The dealer-channel figure rests on the dual-tank prices of the manufacturers that publish one, and the largest national dealer-channel brands publish no price at all — so that range is likely to read low against a real quote from that channel. And the burden multiplier is the whole scale of the labour term: if the trade near you bills at a different multiple of the wage, our labour figure moves with it and nothing in this dataset can currently tell you that it should.
