Military PFAS Dataset: 723 DoD Installations vs Nearby Drinking-Water PFAS

Search a ZIP code or address to see the PFAS-assessed military installations near you, the community and on-base federal water systems serving those areas, and each system's latest EPA UCMR5 monitoring against the current federal limits. Proximity is geographic only, never a statement of cause.

In total, this open dataset maps 2,762 water systems across 723 installations on the DoD PFAS assessment list, each paired with its latest EPA UCMR5 PFAS results against the current federal limits.

We joined the U.S. Department of Defense list of 723 installations being assessed for PFAS to the community water systems whose service area overlaps or lies within 3 miles of the installation boundary, and paired each system with its latest EPA UCMR5 PFAS results against the current federal limits. This is a geographic proximity map, not a claim of cause. Everything below is free to cite under CC BY 4.0.

82 installations sit near a water system over the 4 ppt PFOA/PFOS limit

PFOA or PFOS measured above 4 parts per trillion β€” the enforceable April 2024 EPA maximum β€” in the water system's most recent UCMR5 sample.

145 water systems across 82 installations. Value shown is the latest UCMR5
reading for the driving compound, gauged against the 4 ppt EPA MCL
and the 12 ppt DoD off-base screening level.

175 installations sit near a detected PFAS whose limit is proposed for rescission

A UCMR5 detection of PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (GenX), or PFBS β€” the four compounds whose limits, together with the Hazard Index, the EPA proposed to rescind in 2026 (public comment closes July 20, 2026).

Frequently asked questions

It is a free, citable join of three public federal datasets: the U.S. Department of Defense list of installations being assessed for PFAS, the community and on-base federal water systems whose service areas lie near those installations, and each system's latest EPA UCMR5 PFAS monitoring measured against the current federal drinking-water limits. TapWaterData Editorial maintains it and publishes it under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) license.

Purely by geographic proximity. For each installation the join tests three relationships in order and stops at the first match: the system's service area overlaps the installation boundary, the service area lies within 3 miles of the boundary, or β€” only when no service-area boundary is available β€” the system serves the same county. Proximity is geographic only; it is never a statement that an installation is the source of anything measured in a nearby system.

No. UCMR5 is the EPA's national monitoring program, not a compliance determination. A monitoring value above a limit is reported here as monitoring data, never as a violation. The only violation counts in the dataset come from EPA ECHO Safe Drinking Water Act records, which are a separate field.

The April 2024 EPA PFAS maximum contaminant levels are current, legally enforceable law β€” 4 ppt each for PFOA and PFOS and 10 ppt each for PFHxS, PFNA, and HFPO-DA (GenX), plus a Hazard Index of 1 for mixtures. In 2026 the EPA published two proposals: one proposes to rescind the PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA, and PFBS determinations together with the Hazard Index, and a companion proposes to adjust PFOA and PFOS compliance timing. These are proposals, not final rules; the April 2024 limits remain in force unless and until any change is finalized. The public comment period closes July 20, 2026.
