Why is my tap water yellow?
Start here: is it the hot tap, the cold tap, or both?
Run each tap on its own before you do anything else. Which taps are affected narrows the cause more than any description of the symptom can.
Hot tap only
The water heater is shedding
A yellow tint confined to the hot tap comes from the tank. A water heater that has been in service a long time accumulates corrosion products and releases them into the hot line, while the cold line, which never enters the tank, stays clear. Nothing about the incoming supply is implicated by this pattern.
Cold tap only
Metals or natural color arriving with the water
Yellow on the cold tap arrives with the water, and there are two quite different ways it can. Iron and manganese tint water yellow before they are concentrated enough to look brown. Naturally colored organic material from a surface-water source produces a similar tea-like tint, particularly after heavy rain.

A yellow tint at every tap usually follows something systemic — a switch of source, a seasonal change in a reservoir, or disturbed mains — and tends to show up for a whole neighborhood at once rather than at one address. If your neighbors have it too, stop troubleshooting your plumbing.
On a city water supply
The two municipal explanations for yellow water pull in opposite directions, and telling them apart is the whole job. The first is metals out of the pipes. EPA's secondary standards describe iron above 0.3 mg/L as producing rusty color and reddish or orange staining, and manganese above 0.05 mg/L as producing black to brown color and black staining; below those levels the same metals tint rather than discolor, which is what yellow water usually is. The second is natural color from the source itself. Reservoirs and rivers carry dissolved organic material that rises after heavy rain and in late summer, and EPA has a secondary standard for color as its own parameter — 15 color units, a laboratory measurement rather than a description. That second branch has a consequence the first does not: organic material is the raw material disinfection byproducts form from, and those are enforceable limits, with total trihalomethanes capped at 0.080 mg/L and the five haloacetic acids at 0.060 mg/L. So the question to put to your utility is not just how much iron it reports but what its source is and what it last reported for those two. Iron and manganese are secondary, advisory and often unmonitored; the byproducts of treating colored water are neither advisory nor optional.

What actually fixes it
Yellow water is rarely fixed by buying something, and the first branch costs nothing to run: hot-tap-only means the appliance is the thing to look at, not the supply. On the cold tap, flush the line and then report it, because a utility dealing with seasonal source-water color already knows and can tell you so, and a filter at one sink changes nothing about the water reaching the washing machine. If the tint really is from your own aging galvanized pipework, understand what you are buying before you buy it: a point-of-use filter improves one tap, and repiping is the only thing that removes the source. Two things are worth acting on immediately regardless of cause. Hold off on laundry until a cold tap runs clear, because iron-tinted water sets stains into fabric. And if the tint is new in a home built before 1986 — the era EPA identifies as most likely to have lead pipes — treat that as a separate question and have the water tested, because EPA notes that lead dissolved in water cannot be seen, tasted or smelled. The color tells you nothing about it in either direction.
When it is worth testing
The tint is on the cold tap and does not clear after several minutes of flushing.

Those carry enforceable limits of 0.080 mg/L and 0.060 mg/L, and they are the results that actually matter when organic color is the cause — the tint itself is aesthetic.
The home has galvanized or lead-bearing plumbing and the tint is new.
A certified-lab result for lead on a first-draw sample collected exactly as the lab instructs, alongside iron. EPA is explicit that lead in water cannot be seen, tasted or smelled, so a yellow tint neither implicates nor exonerates it — the two questions have to be answered separately.

Is yellow tap water safe to drink?
It depends on which of the two causes you have, which is why identifying it matters more than reassurance does. Iron and manganese at tinting levels are a staining problem, and EPA regulates them as secondary, non-enforceable standards for exactly that reason. Naturally colored organic material is not a hazard in itself, but it is what disinfection byproducts form from, and those carry enforceable limits — 0.080 mg/L for total trihalomethanes and 0.060 mg/L for the five haloacetic acids. Look at what your utility reported rather than judging by the color of the glass.
What is the difference between yellow and brown tap water?
Partly degree, partly cause. Iron and manganese tint water yellow before they are concentrated enough to look brown, so yellow is often the same distribution-system deposits at a lower level. But yellow has a second cause that brown rarely does: natural organic color from a surface-water source, which arrives with the water rather than coming off the inside of a pipe. That is why the two symptoms lead to different questions — brown points you at what disturbed the mains, yellow at what the source water is doing.
Why does the color come back every summer?
Because surface water changes with the season. Organic material in reservoirs and rivers rises after heavy rain and through late summer, and a system drawing on that source sees more color arriving at the plant. EPA's secondary standard for color is 15 color units, measured in a laboratory rather than judged by eye. A utility on a surface source will normally be able to tell you whether that is what you are seeing, and what it is doing about the disinfection byproducts that come with treating it.
Will a filter remove the yellow tint?
A filter at one tap can improve the water at that tap, but it does not address why the water arrived tinted and it does nothing for the rest of the house — including the laundry, which is where discolored water actually causes damage. Work out first whether the color is coming from the pipes or from the source, because the answer changes the category of solution entirely: pipework is a plumbing job, source-water color is a treatment question for the utility.
