Why does my tap water taste metallic?

Start here: is it the hot tap, the cold tap, or both?

Run each tap on its own before you do anything else. Which taps are affected narrows the cause more than any description of the symptom can.

A metallic taste confined to the hot tap points at the water heater and the pipework downstream of it, where corrosion products accumulate. Cold water that tastes normal effectively rules the incoming supply out — and it is also the reason never to make up baby formula or fill a kettle from the hot tap.

A metallic taste at every tap, all day, no matter how long the water has run, points past your own pipes to the service line or the main. That is the case to take to your utility rather than to a hardware store, because nothing inside the house is producing it.

On a city water supply

This is the symptom where a municipal supply and a private well genuinely differ. A public system treats its water so that it is not corrosive to the pipes it travels through — EPA's secondary standards even list corrosivity itself as a parameter, with a metallic taste and corroded pipes and fixtures as the effects when water is corrosive, and pH outside 6.5 to 8.5 as a related one, low pH giving a bitter metallic taste. So on a city supply the interesting question is usually not what left the plant but what happened between the main and the glass. Four metals give water a metallic taste, and EPA's secondary standards put numbers on all of them: copper at 1.0 mg/L, with blue-green staining alongside the taste; zinc at 5 mg/L; iron at 0.3 mg/L; manganese at 0.05 mg/L, tasting bitter and staining black. Copper is the instructive one, because it also has an enforceable action level of 1.3 mg/L — you can taste copper at a level below the one that triggers regulatory action, which is a useful thing to know before assuming a taste means a violation. Of those four, only copper is federally enforceable; iron and manganese are secondary standards that EPA states it does not enforce and that systems are not federally required to monitor, so the lookup below will often come back not reported for your utility, and that is the true answer rather than a hole in the data. Lead is the metal that breaks the pattern, and it breaks it in the direction that matters: EPA states flatly that you cannot see, taste or smell lead dissolved in water. Lead pipes are more likely in older cities and in homes built before 1986, and the 2011 lead-free standard capped wetted-surface content at a weighted average of 0.25 percent, and 0.2 percent for solder and flux, so plumbing installed before those rules is where the question lives. Under EPA's Lead and Copper Rule Revisions, water systems had to submit an inventory of service line materials to their state by October 16, 2024, and many publish theirs as a map you can search by address. What actually fixes it

Do not let a taste be the deciding evidence in either direction. Running the tap until the water turns properly cold flushes out water that has been standing in your plumbing, and if the taste goes with it, the metal was coming from your own pipes rather than from the supply. What that does not tell you is which metal — and here is the honest negative that matters more than any product recommendation on this page: EPA states that lead dissolved in water cannot be seen, tasted or smelled, so a metallic taste is not evidence of lead and a clean-tasting glass is not evidence against it. The two are simply unrelated questions. If your home predates the 1986 era of lead plumbing, or your service line material is unknown, look up your utility's service line inventory for your address and have a first-draw sample analyzed by a certified lab. Only then does equipment enter the conversation, and it enters narrowly: a filter certified to improve taste is not thereby certified to reduce lead, and buying the first while believing you have bought the second is the expensive version of this mistake.

When it is worth testing

  • The taste is present on the cold tap even after the water has run cold.

    A certified-lab metals result on a cold-tap sample, alongside whatever your utility reports for iron and manganese. That separates metal picked up by water standing in your plumbing from metal arriving through the meter — two problems with completely different owners and completely different fixes.

  • Your service line material is unknown, or the home was built before 1986.

    Your utility's service line inventory record for your address — systems had to submit an initial inventory to their state by October 16, 2024 under EPA's Lead and Copper Rule Revisions — plus a certified-lab first-draw sample collected exactly as the lab instructs. The taste is not a substitute for either, in either direction.

  • The taste comes with blue-green staining in the sink or the bath.

    A certified-lab copper result. EPA's secondary standard puts copper at 1.0 mg/L, listing metallic taste and blue-green staining together as its effects, and there is a separate enforceable action level of 1.3 mg/L. Blue-green marks plus a metallic taste is the one combination on this page that names its own metal before the lab does.

Does a metallic taste in tap water mean it contains lead?

No — and the more important half of the answer is that a normal taste does not mean the water is lead-free either. EPA states plainly that you cannot see, taste or smell lead dissolved in water. A metallic taste is far more likely to come from copper, iron, zinc or manganese, each of which EPA lists under its secondary standards with a metallic or bitter taste as the noticeable effect. Treat the taste as a prompt to check your service line record and get a sample analyzed, never as a result in itself.

Why is the taste worse in the morning?

Because the water has been sitting still in your pipes and fixtures all night, and contact time is what pulls metal out of plumbing and into water. That is the reasoning behind EPA's advice to run the tap — or take a shower, or run a load of laundry — before drawing water to drink, with the length of time depending on whether the home has a lead service line. Letting the tap run until the water turns properly cold, before you fill a glass or a kettle, is the version of that advice you can act on this morning.

Is the metallic taste coming from my pipes or my utility?

The flush test answers it. If the taste disappears after the water has run cold and only returns after the plumbing has sat idle, the metal is coming from inside your home. If it is there all day regardless of how long the tap has run, it is arriving through the meter and belongs to your utility. On a city supply the first case is far more common, because public systems treat their water to be non-corrosive — EPA lists corrosivity as a secondary standard precisely because corrosive water produces metallic taste and damaged fixtures.

Does a filter fix a metallic taste?

It can improve the taste at the tap it is fitted to, but the question worth asking is what the filter is certified to reduce, not what it improves. A unit certified for taste and odor is not automatically certified to reduce lead, and since lead is undetectable by taste, the taste getting better tells you nothing about whether the lead did. Identify the metal with a lab result first, then choose equipment certified for that specific contaminant. In that order, and not the other one.
