Why does my tap water smell like chlorine?

A chlorine smell that appears at every tap and lasts for days usually tracks a change on the utility's side rather than anything in your house — a temporary switch of disinfectant, a seasonal adjustment, or system-wide flushing. Neighbors notice these at the same time you do.

Public systems carry a disinfectant residual all the way to your tap so the water stays protected across the miles of pipe between the plant and your kitchen, and that residual is what you are smelling. Two things set how strong it is. What actually fixes it

Nothing here needs to be bought, and that is the honest answer rather than a preamble to one. Chlorine odor dissipates on its own: a covered jug left in the fridge loses most of it, and letting the tap run clears water that has been standing. If it bothers you enough to filter it, an activated-carbon filter at the drinking tap is the appropriate tool and the cheapest one — this is not a reverse-osmosis problem, and paying for reverse osmosis to solve a taste complaint is paying for the wrong technology.     Ask your utility which disinfectant it uses and whether it has switched recently, then read what it last reported for total trihalomethanes and the five haloacetic acids. Those are the disinfection byproducts that form when disinfectant meets organic material, and unlike the smell they carry enforceable limits — 0.080 mg/L and 0.060 mg/L respectively.

  • The smell is much stronger than usual and has lasted more than a few days.
