Find your schoolโs lead testing results
Search the schools whose lead testing results their state publishes row by row. Every result here is the stateโs own published data, reproduced with the stateโs action level, its unit of measurement and its remediation note attached to the reading.
What this search covers, and what it does not
We hold row-level results for 7 states out of the 51 jurisdictions this survey covers: California, Kansas, New York, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia. If your school is not in this index, its state has not published the data โ that is not a finding that its water is safe, and it is not a finding that its water is unsafe either. It is a fact about disclosure.
Selection bias runs inside the covered states too. Several of these programmes are voluntary, so a school that appears here chose to test and chose to report, and a school missing from a covered state simply has no test reported for it. That makes this data a floor, never a prevalence estimate โ you cannot read the share of schools listed here as the share of schools with lead.
The index loads when you start typing โ it is a 3.9 MB file, so nothing is downloaded until you ask it a question.
Type a school, a city or a district to search.
Row-level results are published by 7 states: California, Kansas, New York, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia. A school anywhere else is missing because its state has not published the data โ that is a fact about disclosure, not about the water.
How to read a result
- A non-detect is not a zero
- It means the laboratory found less lead than it can reliably measure. The reading sits somewhere below that reporting limit, which is why cards show the limit verbatim rather than converting it to a number.
- The unit differs by state
- 6 of the 7 states publish one row per sample taken at a fixture. New York publishes one row per school, carrying that schoolโs count of outlets above and at or below its action level โ so those counts are outlets, never schools and never fixtures.
- Action levels are not comparable
- Across the 51 jurisdictions surveyed they run from 1 ppb to 20 ppb, so every exceedance count on a card names the level it was counted against. A school above 5 ppb in New York and a school above 15 ppb in California have not passed the same test.
