Marketed filter claims, scored against the listings that carry them

We read every contaminant-removal claim published for 174 consumer water filters and replacement elements, and asked one question of each: is there a certification listing for this exact model that carries this contaminant? Of 776 claims scored, 274 are carried by a listing we read, 488 are not, and 14 cannot be determined from the evidence we hold.

Claims and listings read through 2026-09-16. Published 2026-09-20. By TapWaterData Editorial. Free to reuse under CC BY 4.0.

There is no headline percentage in this release, and that is deliberate

The obvious headline โ€” this share of marketed claims is not backed by a listing โ€” is withheld. The matching vocabulary is a reviewed table, not a regex, and an entry is only added after someone reads a real listing and records the certifier's verbatim wording. Today 469 distinct subject terms across 806 claim entries have not been through that review. They are not scored as unbacked and they are not scored as verified โ€” nobody has checked what the certifiers call them, so they carry no verdict at all.

A rate computed over the scored claims alone would quietly drop that queue out of its denominator and read as a rate over the market. So the generator publishes no rate while the queue is open, in its own words:

469 unmapped contaminant term(s) across 806 claim entries carry no verdict at all โ€” the per-claim outcomes below cover 776 of 1582 claim entries, so no study-level rate may be published until the queue is cleared

Clearing it is review work, not compute: each term needs a reviewer to find the listing that uses it, read the wording and add the mapping. Every term is published in full below, so the work is visible and so a later release can be diffed against this one term by term.

What is new here is the direction of the join

Studies of this market start from the certification listing and work outward: they ask what certified filters are certified for, or how well certified filters perform. That design has one structural blind spot. A claim with no listing has no row to appear on, so the population this study is about โ€” contaminants a manufacturer advertises and no certifier has verified โ€” cannot be counted by any of them.

This study joins the other way: it starts from the marketed claim and looks for a listing. That is the only novelty it claims.

It is a small corpus rather than a comprehensive one, and it does not cover every accredited certifier. VerifiedWaterFilterData (2026) published the closest comparable study: 5,682 certified filters from NSF, WQA and IAPMO public listings, under the same licence, with a downloadable dataset. Their corpus is much larger than this one and their figures are theirs, not ours. What their method cannot see is the claim with no listing behind it, which is the whole of this page.

  • 190 by a directory listing that enumerates the contaminant.
  • 84 by a certificate someone read and recorded โ€” the route that exists because one certifier's directory rows do not enumerate contaminants at all.

The denominator

  • 174 records scanned โ€” 131 whole products and 43 replacement elements.
  • 1,453 marketing-claim entries read, yielding 776 contaminant claims with a reviewed mapping.
  • 46 records produced no extractable contaminant claim at all, of which 3 carry no marketing claim in the corpus to begin with.
  • Directories that returned a real listing somewhere in this run, which is the positive control every recorded absence rests on: IAPMO, NSF, WQA.

Named cases, each re-read on the day this published

A sentence about a named company is a claim about that company. The corpus behind this study was read weeks before publication, and a certifier's directory moves: a model gets added, a certification completes, a search that never executed comes back looking exactly like a search that found nothing. So every brand named below had its listing re-read on 2026-09-20, and the read is published with it โ€” the URL, the status, the bytes on the wire and what the page said. A brand that could not be re-read is not named.

One of the five entries below corrects this study rather than a manufacturer โ€” Waterdrop. That is not balance for its own sake; it is what the re-reads found.

iSpring โ€” RCC7AK

Evidence grade: listing-read. Names queried: iSpring Water Systems LLC (company id C0536866); iSpring.

NSF's listing for iSpring Water Systems LLC carries the RCC7AK under NSF/ANSI 58 for TDS Reduction and nothing else, and a manufacturer-name search across every standard returns the same single standard โ€” iSpring holds no NSF/ANSI 42, 53 or 401 listing. Mercury and microplastics, both marketed for this model, appear on no iSpring row at any model. Fluoride does appear on iSpring rows, but not on this one: it is carried by the RCC7AK-BN, RCC7AK-BLK and the two UV-faucet siblings, which the listing certifies out of a different manufacturing facility from the plain RCC7AK. Those are separate certifications of separate products, not finishes of this one, so the fluoride the RCC7AK's own product page markets is not backed for the RCC7AK.

What this does not establish: This is a read of NSF only. IAPMO and WQA returned no listing for the RCC7AK when the corpus was built on 2026-08-30 and were not re-executed today, so no absence is asserted against them here, and none of these reads can speak for the accredited bodies this study does not index. One complication is recorded rather than resolved: the record notes that the Amazon destination it opened on 2026-08-30 resolved to the separately named RCC7AK-BN, which is why it assigns this product no ASIN at all. That observation is more than a month old, it was not re-executed today, and the claims scored here were read from iSpring's own RCC7AK page โ€” so it cannot move a verdict about the RCC7AK, and it is published here as the open question it is.

Clearly Filtered โ€” Water Pitcher

Evidence grade: listing-read. Names queried: Clearly Filtered, Inc. (company id C0872271); Clearly Filtered.

Both directories that list this pitcher were read today and both carry the same two-claim scope: NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine and for taste and odour. There is no NSF/ANSI 53 listing for the company. The product page the corpus read markets chlorine, fluoride, lead, arsenic and PFAS, so four of those five are outside every listing this study read.

What this does not establish: Clearly Filtered publishes independent laboratory results for the contaminants outside its listings. A claim with no listing is not automatically an unsubstantiated claim โ€” the FTC's bar is competent and reliable scientific evidence, and third-party certification is one route to it rather than the only one. This study measures certification coverage of claims, not truthfulness.

APEC โ€” ROES-50

Evidence grade: listing-read. Names queried: APEC Water Systems; APEC.

WQA's own detail page for APEC Water Systems, read today, lists the ROES-50 under one reduction claim: TDS. NSF returns no matching product for APEC at all. The ROES-50 product page the corpus read publishes a contaminant table running to dozens of entries, from aluminium and arsenic to bacteria and barium.

What this does not establish: A reverse-osmosis membrane physically rejects far more than TDS; what is scoped here is what a certifier has verified and published, not what the unit does. APEC is certified โ€” by WQA, to NSF/ANSI 58 โ€” and the finding is about the breadth of the listing, not its existence.

Waterdrop โ€” X16

Evidence grade: listing-read. Names queried: Waterdrop; Qingdao Ecopure Filter Co., Ltd.

Waterdrop is named here as a correction to this study's own method, not as a finding against the company. Searching NSF for the brand name returns no matching product; searching for its manufacturer, Qingdao Ecopure Filter Co., Ltd., returns a listing under NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401 in which hundreds of rows are Waterdrop-branded. A brand-level sentence reading "Waterdrop has no NSF listing" would therefore be false. The model-exact verdict survives it: no row in that listing is an X16, and the corpus's own evidence for the X16 is an IAPMO certificate carrying TDS, chlorine, taste and odour, and a lead-free materials row.

What this does not establish: An absence found under one name is not an absence. This is the second-query rule, and it is in this table because it changed an answer: the first query would have supported a brand-level claim the second query falsifies.

Aquagear โ€” Water Filter Pitcher

Evidence grade: searched-no-listing. Names queried: Aquagear (trade name); Aquagear (manufacturer name).

Two NSF queries today โ€” trade name and manufacturer name โ€” both return no matching product, against a positive control on the same host and script in the same run. The corpus holds no listed claim for this pitcher from any indexed body. Every claim on its record is written as an independent-laboratory measurement with a challenge concentration and a test method, which is the pattern this study counts as marketed-but-unlisted rather than as an unsupported assertion.

What this does not establish: Not listed is not untested and it is not false. Teymoorian and colleagues recorded the same position in a peer-reviewed comparison of pitcher filters: Aquagear is not NSF-certified for PFAS removal, and the manufacturer provides third-party performance data on its website.

Limitations

  • IAPMO R&T listings do not enumerate contaminants. The search interface this study harvests folds a product's reduction table into a single category-level description such as "Water Conditioners (Reverse Osmosis)", and the per-model table lives on the certificate rather than in the search result. Treating that as "nothing certified" would be false and would erase real lead, fluoride and arsenic certifications; passing it silently would launder an unverified claim. So an IAPMO row resolves only through a recorded certificate reading โ€” certificate URL, date read, listed model, claims verbatim โ€” and otherwise lands in not determinable. That rule is why category-granularity-no-attestation exists as a reason in the table above, and it reads 0 in this release only because every such row with a certificate behind it was resolved by reading that certificate.
  • 14 claims have no verdict, and they are reported rather than rounded away. A two-way split would be a cleaner headline and a worse measurement: every one of these is a case where a directory returned the model and the claim table was never read, or a listing exists at category granularity with no certificate reading behind it. They are not evidence of over-claiming and they are not evidence against it.
  • The study-level rate is withheld while the review queue is open. 469 terms across 806 claim entries carry no verdict. This is the biggest single limit on the release and it is why no share, proportion or rate appears anywhere on this page.
  • "Not listed" means not listed by IAPMO R&T, NSF International and WQA Gold Seal. It never means uncertified. CSA Group, ICC and UL Solutions are also accredited for drinking water treatment units and this corpus holds none of their listings, so a product certified only by one of them would read here as unlisted.
  • The join is model-exact, and SKUs have siblings. A faucet-finish or UV variant is a different row in a certifier's directory and can carry a different claim set from the base model โ€” sometimes certified out of a different manufacturing facility, which makes it a separate certification rather than a finish. The re-read published above found exactly that: a fluoride listing that belongs to sibling SKUs and does not reach the model whose product page markets fluoride. It is why a verdict here is a statement about one model and never about the family โ€” in either direction, since reading a sibling's listing across would have cleared a claim the certifier has not cleared.
  • An unlisted claim is not automatically an unsubstantiated one. Certification is voluntary, and a manufacturer may hold valid laboratory data it never submitted for certification. What is measured here is certification coverage of marketed claims โ€” a narrower and more checkable statement than "false advertising", and one nothing on this page should be read as making.
  • This is a small corpus. 174 records is not the market, and it is far smaller than the certification-corpus studies that already exist. The contribution is the direction of the join, not the size of the sample.

Every source this study was measured against, with the evidence grade of each reading, is on the methodology page.
