Boil water advisories in Maine

Maine: 5 water systems under an active boil water advisory.

14 more systems are under a do-not-drink order and 11 under long-standing notices; see below.

We read this state's own advisory list

The agency that publishes it
Maine CDC Drinking Water Program
What that list covers
Boil Water Orders and Do Not Drink Orders published statewide by the Maine CDC Drinking Water Program in the two tables on its Drinking Water Safety Alerts page, each naming the water system by its EPA water-system ID. Many are small seasonal systems such as campgrounds, and some orders have stood for more than a year. The page lists only orders in force, so an order is treated as lifted only after it is missing from two consecutive reads.

On our last read, this list showed 30 water systems under a boil water or do-not-drink notice it had not recorded as lifted.

We read it on an hourly cycle. Last successful read

Do not drink this water. Boiling will not make it safe.

These systems are under a do-not-drink or do-not-use order, not a boil water advisory. The two are not interchangeable, and the difference decides what you should do.

Boiling kills bacteria and viruses. It does nothing to nitrate, arsenic or PFAS โ€” it concentrates them, because the water leaves as steam and the contaminant stays behind. Treating one of these orders the way you would treat an advisory about organisms would make the water worse, not better.

Read the notice your own utility sent, and follow it. It names the substance, the area it covers, and what the utility is telling residents to use instead. Nothing here replaces that notice.

Questions about this page

Does this page list every boil water advisory in Maine?
It lists what Maine CDC Drinking Water Program's own statewide list showed when we last read it, one entry per water system rather than one per notice. A notice a utility issued directly, and never sent to that list, would not appear here.
Where are boil water advisories for Maine published?
Maine CDC Drinking Water Program publishes them, and its own statewide list is the list we read into this page on an hourly cycle. The link to it is on this page.
How many water systems does this page cover?
Our database holds 156 public water systems in Maine. That is a count of what is in our database, not a count of every public water system in the state. Advisories are counted by water system, keyed on the system's federal identifier, and never by the number of separate notices one system has been given.
Is anything on this page a verdict about whether the water is safe?
This is not a statement that your water is safe. It means the state's list did not name your system. Your utility is the authority for your own water.
