USDA Well Water Test Requirements
Buying a home on a private well with a USDA loan? Federal underwriting requires a drinking-water test from a state-certified lab before closing. Here is exactly what the USDA program checks for, the rules to watch, and how to get your well tested.
Does my USDA loan require a well test?
Yes. If the home you are financing is served by an individual (private) well, the USDA program requires a water-quality test before the loan can close. The sample must be analyzed by a laboratory certified by your state to test private-well drinking water, using EPA-approved methods.
Required minimum test panel
- coliform
- nitrate
- nitrite
- lead
At a minimum, a federally-backed loan test covers coliform, nitrate, nitrite, lead. Your state or lender may require additional analytes depending on local groundwater conditions.
USDA well-test rules
A water test is required
A USDA Rural Development (RD) loan on a home served by a private well requires a water-quality test from a state-certified lab before closing, confirming the supply is safe and adequate for the household.
The exact panel is set by your state or lender
Unlike FHA, USDA Rural Development does not publish a single fixed national contaminant list. The required bacteriological and chemical panel varies by state RD office and lender โ confirm the exact analytes with your lender before ordering the test.
At minimum, expect the federal loan-gate panel
In practice the panel includes at least the federal loan-gate minimum (coliform, nitrate, nitrite, lead) โ a bacteriological test plus nitrate/nitrite and lead โ but your state's RD requirements may be broader.
Certified lab, before closing
As with FHA and VA, the sample must be analyzed by a state-certified drinking-water laboratory and a passing result delivered to the lender before the loan closes.

Find a state-certified lab
Your USDA test must come from a lab certified by your state. We list certification programs by state so you can find an accepted laboratory near you.
A loan test confirms the water quality of your individual well at the property you are buying. Area risk models โ like the county-level USGS estimates elsewhere on this site โ describe a region as a whole and do not predict any single well, so they cannot satisfy a lender.

USDA well water test FAQ
Does a USDA loan require a well water test?
Yes. A USDA Rural Development loan on a private-well property requires a water-quality test from a state-certified lab before closing. The exact panel is specified by your state RD office and lender.
What does the USDA well water test check for?
USDA Rural Development does not publish a single fixed national panel โ the required bacteriological and chemical analytes vary by state and lender. Expect at least the federal loan-gate minimum (coliform, nitrate, nitrite, lead), and confirm the full list with your lender.
Who can perform a USDA well water test?
The sample must be analyzed by a state-certified drinking-water laboratory using EPA-approved methods. Your lender or state RD office can point you to acceptable labs and tell you which analytes they require.
Does the USDA test prove my specific well is safe?
Yes. The certified lab analyzes a sample from the actual well at the property. County-level USGS area estimates describe a region as a whole and cannot substitute for testing the individual well.
