What a water company decides, and what it does not

A water company sets its own temporary use bans, publishes its own exemptions and reports its own supply-area quality. It does not set the drinking-water standards it is measured against, and it does not decide whether a restriction applies nationally: there is no national hosepipe ban, only company decisions that happen to overlap.

So the page you are on answers the questions that are genuinely per company, and links to the national view for the ones that are not.

Where these facts come from

The supply areas are read from the water industry's own published boundary layer. The restriction status comes from three sources. The Environment Agency's weekly list of the temporary use bans in force in England is read every time the status is checked, and so is this company's own notice where its site lets an automated reader read it; some companies' sites refuse automated readers, and their notices are not asked. The statutory ban and removal notices published in The Gazette are read overnight, in the hours The Gazette's terms of use allow. The status page records which of them established what, and on which day.

Where this company's own notice could not be read, or is not asked, the status page says so and says why. A challenge page, a moved address and an address that answers with nothing on it are different findings, and none of them means there is no restriction.

What we hold on Northern Ireland Water

We hold no drinking-water data for Northern Ireland. Every source this site reads covers England and Wales only, and Northern Ireland's drinking water is regulated separately, by the Drinking Water Inspectorate for Northern Ireland.

Hosepipe ban status

A restriction can start or end between updates of this page, so the current status is kept where it is re-read whenever a new reading is published: Northern Ireland Water hosepipe ban status.
