Do you need a water softener in the UK?

The hardness at which water will produce scale measures 200 mg/L as CaCO₃ of total hardness, the level World Health Organisation Guidelines 2017 identify as scale-forming, per Drinking Water Inspectorate — Water Hardness / Hard Water, including its guidance on softening (read 20 September 2026).

What this page can tell you, and what it cannot

A softener is worth buying, or not, depending on the water that arrives at your own stop tap. That figure is published by the company that supplies you, not by the regulator, and most of them publish it only one address at a time. So the first thing this page does is send you to check whether we hold yours.

What we will not do is turn that figure into a recommendation. No authority here publishes a hardness at which a softener becomes worth installing, and a threshold invented by a website that also links to shops is not a substitute for one.

Why the regulator is quoted rather than summarised

The passages below are printed in full and in the regulator's own words. Two of them are safety instructions, and a shortened safety instruction is a different instruction: the reason for it, the mechanism behind it, and the people it is aimed at are exactly the parts a summary drops.

Everything on this page that is not inside quotation marks is either a figure with its own source beside it, or a sentence about how the page was put together.

What is sold as a softener, and what softens water

A large part of the search for softeners is really a search for something cheaper that promises the same result without plumbing or salt. The regulator has looked at that class of device and published what it found, which is quoted below without editing.

That finding is about whether such a device softens water. It is not a claim about any particular product on sale, and no product is named anywhere on this page.

Do you need a water softener?

This site publishes no recommendation for or against one in the United Kingdom, at 200 mg/L as CaCO₃ or at any other figure.

  • Nothing published in the United Kingdom says a softener is warranted above one hardness figure or unnecessary below another. What was looked for: a hardness figure above which a United Kingdom authority says a water softener is warranted, or below which it says one is not. Where: the Drinking Water Inspectorate's own consumer page on water hardness, which is the page that publishes the five-band scale and answers the purchase question directly.
  • Drinking Water Inspectorate answers the question directly, and its answer is: "This is a matter of personal choice. If you live in a hard water area, then a softener will improve the efficiency and increase the life of domestic appliances."
  • Even at the 200 mg/L as CaCO₃ its own page relays as the level at which water will produce scale, that is still the published answer. A figure of ours above which we told you to buy one would be ours alone.
  • What would change this: a UK regulator, a UK standards body or a UK statutory guideline stating a hardness at which softening is recommended. The US band copy this site already ships is scaled to the USGS classification rather than to the DWI's, so it is not a substitute; the World Health Organisation figure the DWI relays is about scale forming in water, not about buying equipment.

What the regulator says about softening water

whether to install a softener at all
This is a matter of personal choice. If you live in a hard water area, then a softener will improve the efficiency and increase the life of domestic appliances. It will make lathering easier and reduce tide marks on sanitary ware.

the tap a softener must not be plumbed into
If you do install a water softener, it is very important that you make sure that it is correctly installed, and you do not soften the water to the tap in your kitchen which is used for drinking and cooking. This is because most water softeners work by replacing the hardness with sodium. Too much sodium can be a problem for premature babies because their kidneys are not good at filtering it out of the blood, and for people who are on a low sodium (low salt) diet. Artificially softened water may also be aggressive to plumbing causing leaching of copper and lead.

devices sold as softeners that do not soften
Some devices are sold on the basis that they produce a magnetic field which reduces scaling by altering the shape of the crystals from needle like to rhomboid – which means they are less adherent to the heating elements in boilers. These devices do not soften the water. The science behind them is based on continuous water flow and they were designed originally for large industrial water systems, not for the household situation, where water tends not to flow for up to eight hours in 24 hours (at night). If you are considering purchasing such a device it is recommended you do so only on a sale or return basis, and that you request data on performance in the home setting.

where in the plumbing a softener is fitted
Where water is softened in this way by base exchange softening it is important to provide an unsoftened outlet for drinking purposes. Installation of a softener just before the hot water tank or boiler is a more economical method for preventing precipitation of hardness salts (limescale) than softening the whole supply.

buying a softener and having it installed
When purchasing a water softener, we advise that you buy it from a reputable supplier. It should be installed only by a qualified plumber who is a member of a recognised Trade Association, such as the Institute of Plumbing. We also advise that you consider putting in place a maintenance contract to ensure the softener continues to operate correctly and does not become a hygiene hazard.
