Sources and method for UK water data

Every figure on our UK pages comes from a published source: a regulator, a government body, a water company or another named publisher. Below are the sources and their editions, publication, update and read dates where recorded, with licences where the publishers state them.

How we use these sources

  • Each figure on our UK pages names its source and the period it covers, beside the figure.
  • Where a source does not cover a place, the page says so. We do not fill a gap with a neighbouring area's figure or an average.
  • Water companies, regulators and government bodies publish on different timetables, so each source below carries its own edition and dates.
  • The share of older homes on our lead pages is an estimate from council-tax records, not a test of any pipe.
